Pre-Hospital EMS

The St. Vincent’s Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of EMS provides medical authorization, oversight and continuing education for area pre-hospital providers.

The Division additionally functions to support EMS providers in their roles and to improve the transition of care between prehospital and in-hospital providers.

Our Team

Steven Valassis, MD

Emergency Department and EMS Medical Director 

Dr. Valassis received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he received the Founders’ Day Scholar Award and the Gregory Dean Legon Memorial Award. Dr. Valassis is board certified in Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.  He has been on the staff at St. Vincent’s since 2006 as a staff physician and holds the positions of Medical Director, Emergency Medicine Patient Affairs, EMS Medical Director and Medical Director of the Emergency Department.

Dr. Valassis has been nominated and received several awards in his career. He has twice received a Values Recognition Award for going above and beyond to care for his patients. In 2012 he was nominated for the prestigious Melville Magida Award from the Fairfield County Medical Association which recognizes a young physician who is genuinely concerned for the patients they serve. Most recently he was awarded the Physician of the Year Award from the Greater Bridgeport Medical Association.

Dr. Valassis was appointed Chairperson of Emergency Medicine in 2018. He is the Academic Chair and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Frank H. Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University.

Wesley Young, MS, CCEMTP, EMSI

Director of EMS Operations, Fairfield Region

Wesley has worked in Emergency Services with over 35 years of experience. His diverse background includes roles as a Paramedic, Flight Paramedic, Firefighter, Law enforcement, Paramedic Program Coordinator, and EMS service chief. Wesley's commitment to education is further underscored by his master’s degree in emergency services management. He shared his knowledge and skills in paramedicine across multiple states before settling in Connecticut in 2010. In his current role, Wesley is responsible for overseeing all EMS Operations, including medical control and educational programs.

Elizabeth Egan, BS, Paramedic

EMS Operations Manager

Elizabeth is a licensed paramedic with over 6 years of experience in commercial and private services. Elizabeth’s background emphasizes education and includes a B.A. in mathematics and biology, as well as instructor certifications in ACLS, PALS, EPC, CPR, EMS-I, and more. A winner of multiple awards for excellent care and leadership, Elizabeth has taught EMT and Paramedic classes with a primary focus in Anatomy and Physiology. When she’s not busy at work, Liz enjoys a round of golf and crochet.   Elizabeth is a lead instructor in the paramedic program and Quality Assurance Coordinator for the regional medical control. 

Louise Bronson, NRP

EMS Care Coordinator/Program Manager

Louis has been a long-time presence in the Southwest EMS region, with over 20 years of experience in EMS.  A licensed and nationally registered paramedic of over 12 years, Louis also has an associate’s degree in recording engineering. As a regional FTO and Paramedic field instructor, Louis has trained and assisted in training many of the paramedics and EMT’s currently practicing within the region, significantly contributing to the high standard of EMS care in the area. He also has taught in multiple paramedic classes over the years, primarily in practical instruction. Louis has also received multiple regional awards and was Paramedic of the year for the town of Stratford in 2023. Louis brings a high energy and enthusiasm with him wherever he goes and when he is not working prides himself in being a full time Dad to his 10 year old daughter. Louis heads up the community injury prevention education and works with the EMS team to promote the hospital and all of its service lines.
